Shiro

shiro

Oil on canvas 20 x 16, for Glyndbourne’s competition for young artists, to submit artwork inspired by Madama Butterfly. In a traditional wedding shiromuku, butterfly’s delicately adorning her wataboshi, the red circle represents both her love for Pinkerton and the anguish he causes her. Purposefully done so that the painting in its entirety looks like a Japanese flag.
